LandEscape Alberto Colliva - Filippo Maestroni - Claudio Valerio Thursday, 24 September, from 6 to 8:30 pm, Studio la Linea Verticale opens LandEscape, a three-person exhibition featuring artists Alberto Colliva, Filippo Maestroni and Claudio Valerio, marking a new phase in the gallery’s curatorial research, with an increasing focus on spirituality and transcendence. LandEscape explores spirituality through the lens of landscape, playing with the very notion of the word: no longer simply a landscape, but an escape from materiality, from the Earth, arriving, through a pantheistic disposition, in a fractured landscape. On view until 14 November, the exhibition offers a gentle introduction to the gallery’s new exhibition programme, which will include a focus on transcendental painting. The opening will take place concurrently with Galleria Studio Cenacchi, at Via Santo Stefano 63, where Filippo Maestroni will present a different body of work from his artistic research.
TEXT
Throughout the history of Italian visual culture, the sacred has rarely manifested itself through emptiness or an escape from the real; on the contrary, it has always demanded the weight of the world in order to take form. Stone, arid earth, flesh, the density of matter and sudden cuts of light have constituted the first language through which the invisible has found expression. Starting from this awareness, the exhibition reconsiders the concept of landscape: the Italian peninsula, with its steep coastlines, blinding expanses and nocturnal blacks, is removed from conventional narrative and returned to its nature as a threshold. Through an operation recalling the phenomenological principle of epoché, Alberto Colliva, Filippo Maestroni and Claudio Valerio strip the canvas of anecdotal elements; what remains is a bare and resonant visual architecture, capable of transforming the horizontal breadth of the geographical gaze into a vertical axis of ascent, in which painting becomes a place of suspension. Bringing together works by established artists who have long been part of the gallery’s research with new voices in painting, LandEscape establishes a starting point for a long-term investigation. It proposes the pictorial surface as a terrain of passage, a tangible sign capable of containing and revealing the complexity of what remains invisible. The Artists Within this theoretical framework, Alberto Colliva’s practice approaches the earth in its hardest, most telluric sense. The rocky surface and pantheistic roots of his work do not seek a mimetic rendering, but are constantly disrupted by sharp interruptions in the continuity of the image. Contours and volumes are literally burned and flattened beneath a violent, clear and absolute light. Colliva’s landscape is the moment in which matter, under the weight of light, reveals its deception. Claudio Valerio, by contrast, constructs an investigation into the nocturnal and interior dimension, relying on a dense spatiality traced through charcoal and oil. In a contemporary world dominated by hyper-visibility and the luminous saturation of urban environments, his gardens and shadowed views operate through subtraction. Valerio’s night is never a space of deprivation, but rather one of shelter and spiritual contemplation, where faint glimmers and murmurs of light allow the gaze to reclaim its deeper sense of time. Finally, Filippo Maestroni, whose practice enters the gallery’s spaces for the first time, transforms the topography of the ravines of the Faenza area into vividly metaphysical scenarios. Through altered colour palettes, forms that appear to free themselves from gravity, and the presence of archetypal elements such as the vase, the natural landscape undergoes a veritable process of alchemical distillation. Earthly matter loses its weight and nature, becoming increasingly rarefied, gradually approaches the state of an apparition.
