SHAPES OF TIME
By Maria Chiara Wang
In an art-historical context that, in waves, has subverted the definitions and status of the various art languages over the last century, sculpture too has been - and is - subject to new interpretations. In reference to it, we have come to speak of "expanded field" (Rosalind Krauss, 1978) and of "three-dimensional conformation" (Antonella Greco) in order to embrace the wide and varied production that, to date, includes figuration and abstraction, works realised with different techniques and materials, from the more usual ones (marble, bronze, wood, metal) to the more innovative ones (recycled materials, electronic and digital devices, ...), locations in heterogeneous contexts (galleries, museums, public places) and hybridisations with other forms of expression.
In the panorama just described, Michelangelo Galliani's sculpture represents a balanced synthesis of tradition and actuality, the former inherent in the method, the latter in the structure and content. The artist sculpts the material by hand, giving it form in the extended time of the classical process. It is precisely time that turns out to be an essential component of the creative process since the work happens during its making: in the variables inherent in the manual realisation of the work there is an unpredictability that the machine does not possess, a potential for transformation. And it is here that the soul of sculpture and its essence reside. In Galliani the representation of the human figure - in the contrast that arises between the solemnity of classical forms, innovative compositions and subjects taken from the contemporary world - acts as a bridge between past and present.
On the occasion of the exhibition SAGITTA, ORDINARIO - UOMO - STRAORDINARIO, at Studio la Linea Verticale in Bologna, Michelangelo Galliani also becomes a sculptor of space: the artist redefines the exhibition spaces through an installation choice that includes a rich selection of works placed both on the floor, on the wall and on supports. Thus, Sebastiano (2024) in black Marquinia marble and lead - the fulcrum of the exhibition, so much so as to determine its title in synecdoche - and the sculpture Cartolina da Istanbul (2023) in black Marquinia marble, stainless steel and lead are counterbalanced by the tapestry Paesaggi notturni (2023) in lead, bronze and brass, the wall tondi in statuary marble and brass of the Icons series (2019) and the fragments of a face in straw-coloured onyx lying on a lead background of Eda (2024).
